There are some scary older drivers out there!
This article edited and reposted from December 8, 2018
Haven’t you had experiences on the road and thought, “Wow, THEY shouldn’t be driving anymore!”
On the other hand, younger drivers are even more dangerous! And, many older drivers are proud to still be driving. So, what’s the solution?
Matt Gurwell from Keeping Us Safe has a solution for families that allows drivers to determine whether they are still safely driving.
Matt can tell harrowing stories about drivers that should have stopped driving before trouble occurred but he wanted to find a way to get the keys away while allowing loved ones to maintain their sense of dignity.
As a retired trooper who created a solution for older drivers, Matt explains in the video below! Please watch!

Hi Kathryn, I just watched the episode with Matt Gurwell and was taken back to when my father had to stop driving. I remember being torn between his loss of independence and the safety of others. I do think the use of ride sharing and the continued progress of driverless cars will be very helpful to help seniors keep our mobility and independence! Thank you!
Thank you for your comment, Klaus! Glad they’re making things easier for us when it’s OUR turn to turn in those keys!
I loved your interview about driving. My mother-in-law, aged 91, just smashed her car into the mailbox at her condo, so she is done! Her kids told her a few years back to stop driving. You’re right, it’s a hard thing to do after decades of driving. Thank God no one got hurt!
Thank you for commenting, Gary. I think this interview hit home with many people with personal experiences! We need this program, for sure!
I have often witnessed the joy a senior gets in anticipating being picked up to run errands and share a meal.
Hey Bill! Thank you for your comment! Yes, as long as someone has places to go and ways to get there, who wouldn’t be happy? I love getting out, too! : )
I am saving this information. This is a serious subject we all need to address. My 85 year old father passed his exam at the eye doctor and was deemed legal for day time driving only for the first time. I then took him to the license bureau and he passed the test, but if his macular degeneration worsens, we must alert the doctor and be re-tested. He still has his independence, but the day will probably come when that will no longer be the case.
So glad you liked it! Wouldn’t it be great if he gave up his license willingly so you wouldn’t have to feel like it was taken from him!?
This is a wonderful program! Such an important intervention and way to assist a senior in making a very important decision. Thank you!
I agree, Kathi! Thank you for your comment!
Kathryn,
This was really well done. I’ve known Matt for years and it’s really special to have him share so comprehensively outside of a professional training so that consumers and caregivers can learn. This is such a common issue I support my clients with. I will share this recording with them. Thank you for bringing this to your audience!
Thank you, Kelsey! He’s done an amazing job and he was a fun interview, too!
