Enjoy Our Pickle Tasting Fun!

Posted on July 25, 2020July 25, 2020 by Kathryn Eyring

Pickle Tasting Was A Fun Activity For The Aging Gracefully TV Team This Week!

Why not serve up some pickles with smiles?

Cucumbers of all varieties are abundant at this time of the year in Ohio. Maybe you have some in your own home garden?

The Aging Gracefully TV Team found out that Refrigerator Dills are surprisingly easy to make! (Find the recipe listed below.)

If you remember an old Andy Griffith episode where Aunt Bee entered a pickle contest, you’ll understand our fun with pickle tasting even more!

Enjoy Our Pickle Tasting Video!

The Aging Gracefully TV Team took pickles on the road to bring smiles to friends.

The recipe below is not a canned pickle recipe so it’s truly EASY. It’s fun to do with kids, too. It takes less than an hour to make these crunchy pickles and then three days of patience while awaiting results! SO worth it!

Refrigerator Dills Recipe

Thank you to our friend Laura who shared this dill pickle recipe with me! She said these pickles remind her of her Hungarian grandma!

(Amounts below can be halved)  One big pot or two wide-mouth jars make the process easier!

  • 3-1/2 c water
  • 1-1/4 c white vinegar
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 T sea salt
  • 4 c cucumber spears
  • 2 cloves garlic – whole
  • 2 heads fresh dill (I used entire flower head with fronds and stem)
  1. Stir water, vinegar, sugar, and salt in saucepan.  Bring to boil. Cool completely.
  2. Pack spears, a garlic clove, and a dill head per jar.
  3. Pour cooled vinegar solution over to cover.  Seal with lid.
  4. Refrigerate at least 3 days before enjoying and sharing.

Are YOU ready for a pickle contest? Please send in YOUR favorite pickle recipe so we can share it with others!!

As I am picking more cucumbers than I can possibly handle this was enjoyable this morning. I actually made a batch of refrigerator pickles for my son and daughter In law to take on their trip to give to one of her relatives. She had Tasted these a few years ago at a summer party and every time I know they are going to see her I make a batch. I do believe in little moments of kindness. I believe what you give away comes back twice fold. Thanks for sharing. And I know every episode of Andy Griffith it is my absolute favorite show. No one will play the Trivia game with me anymore hahaha!!! How I wish I lived in a black-and-white 1950s world where everything was simple and everybody was kind.

So glad you enjoyed it! I’m praying for simpler, kinder days again soon, Sandi!

WOW — First off, clearly you must be a fan of pickles or you wouldn’t have taken the time to do this enjoyable segment. I’ve been a pickle lover since I can’t remember. I do remember going down into our basement, circa 1940’s, and with unwashed hands, probably actually dirty hands, reaching down into the huge crock my grandmother had with cukes morphing into pickles. I would help myself to one or two of said morphs. Man were they ever good!! Loved them then and love them now. My fav is the old fashioned large “Dill” which Bell View still makes and I buy by the gallon. And, coincidentally I just polished off the last pickle in a jar sent to me from our son Larry (along with some corned beef) from Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, where he always tries to enjoy a corned beef or pastrami sandwich on his occasional band performances in the big city.

What a fun story, Bob! I’m picturing your dirty hands in the pickle jar!
