I asked Mike Ivan to be on my TV show because he has great advice – whether you’re helping your parents to downsize, considering YOUR own downsizing options, or both!
In this episode of Aging Gracefully, Mike explains how to get started in your transition to smaller living spaces.
The move might be from a house to an apartment or condo, or from a smaller home to a senior living facility. Or, perhaps the transition involves moving from one’s home into just a room in another family member’s home.
Regardless of the circumstances, downsizing can be difficult!
Even the healthiest adults can experience extreme stress when transitioning, displaying symptoms of depression like crying, expressing a negative attitude, or anxiety and sleeplessness.
The best thing we can do is plan ahead for this time in life!
Eliminate items you aren’t using regularly before you feel “forced” to do so. Give away your treasures as gifts to your loved ones while you’re alive rather than having these items be sorted through after you’re gone.
Mike Ivan offers an explanation as to how expensive collectibles have lost so much of their original value, and why you might want to start using your mother’s good china NOW!
If you’re considering downsizing, or helping someone with this, consider a professional to help you sort out market values of items, align available resources, and even help with the physical burden of sorting and packing.
Watch this episode as Mike gives information that you can use NOW!
Tell me in the comments below…
Have you started to downsize?
Have you already helped a loved one with this challenge?
Have downsized, given most treasured items to our children, have not started using the
precious china, BUT think I just will do so.
Thank you for commenting! Glad it gave you something to think about!
